5 Herbs and Spices for Diabetes Prevention

Eastern Medicine

Herbal medicine has been used for centuries by the Chinese and this technique is still being used by many today. Many herbs have a healing and preventative power behind them that can keep us healthy and strong without the use of synthetic ingredients and drugs. Chinese herbal medicine treats the body in a holistic approach, not by symptom.

Diabetes is a widespread disease that can be crippling and painful. There are herbs and spices that can help to prevent the onset of diabetes by healing the body and balancing glucose tolerance and aiding in the bodies ability to handle sugar levels in the body on its own.

Here are five such herbs and spices that you might consider using if you have a family history of diabetes or if you have the early signs:

Turmeric is a common spice used in many Indian foods including curry. It also has many healing benefits. One such benefit is its ability to prevent and even treat diabetes. It helps the body learn to regulate blood sugar levels and combat insulin resistance. It also treats many of the side effects of diabetes like kidney damage many patients get due to their diabetes and atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of fatty acids inside your arteries. Turmeric can be taken as a supplement or just eaten on a regular basis.

Lemon Balm

The way lemon balm aids in diabetes prevention is by regulating blood sugar levels and strengthening liver metabolism. The best way to use this herb is through a tea made of the leaves of the lemon balm plant. Lemon balm also helps to relieve anxiety and insomnia, and stop indigestion and heartburn.

Black Tea

Black tea has been proven to have the strongest polysaccharides to absorb sugar. This reduces the absorption of sugar into the body helping reduce blood sugar levels and prevent diabetes. It can also be beneficial to find a black tea that has the added ingredient of ginseng as this herb has also been proven to cut down the absorption of blood sugar by more than a half.

Bitter Cumin

Bitter cumin has long been used to treat fever, hypoglycemia, and pain but it can also prevent the onset of diabetes. This spice has a very high level of antioxidants which can kill free radicals in our body that causes diabetes, along with cancer, Alzheimer’s and heart disease.

Matcha is a powdered green tea that can also heal the body. Like bitter cumin, this tea has high levels of antioxidants and can also regulate blood sugar levels and reduce cholesterol. It is important to note, however, that matcha contains a high level of caffeine so it shouldn’t be consumed to excess or too close to bedtime.

These herbs can be helpful in increasing the health and immune system of the body but it is important to always talk to your physician before you decide to quit any medical treatment they are giving you or use these herbs as a treatment. Some of these herbs might not interact well with any medicines you might be taking so get clearance from your doctor first.
