The Five Element theory is also one of the major tools for diagnosis in Chinese Medicine (also referred to as the “Five Phases” theory); it is the most complex systems of thought in Chinese Medicine.. Many practitioners now use the Yin and Yang method, the Five-Element theory, or both to diagnose the condition of a patient. The ancients believed that everything in this universe is united, including the elements surrounding a person. The five elements are the phases of nature, and each of the elements consists of a particular direction, organ, taste, color, and season. The five elements work in a cycle, promoting and reinforcing each other, but at the same time, these elements have the ability to control or dominate the other elements. It is the balance of the cycle and its elements that keeps the body healthy.
