FAQ 2

Subluxation

Subluxation is a condition that is typically used by chiropractors and experts in the medical field. When a subluxation occurs, the whole nervous system can be disrupted. A vertebral subluxation happens when a spinal bone (vertebra) becomes misaligned when compared to the bones (vertebrae) located above it and below it. Subluxations can potentially lead to neurological conditions due to the pressure of the misaligned vertebrae on the adjacent nerves. Over time, subluxations can lead to adverse effects on the intervertebral discs, vertebrae, and surrounding tissues. If left untreated for an extended time, this damage may become irreversible.

Types of subluxation

Correcting subluxation is the primary way chiropractors provide health benefits to the body. There are two types of subluxation. One kind of subluxation leads to pinching or compressing the nerves, causing interference along the associated nerve root. Sciatica is an example of this.

The other type of subluxation leads to stretching or twisting of the spinal cord, known as adverse mechanical cord tension. This stretching can cause a change in the nervous system, which can lead to nerves being over-stimulated or can put pressure on the spinal cord, restricting nerve flow. In both cases, the result is abnormal nerve function, which may have a profound impact on the health of the spine and the overall health of the body.

Benefits of subluxation correction include:

  • A healthy nervous system.

Correcting subluxation allows proper communication between the brain and the body. The brain controls virtually all the functions of the body. It regulates the musculoskeletal system, digestive system, immune system, respiratory system, and circulatory system. The brain also manages the healing process. When the spine is out of alignment, the spinal cord and spinal nerves are stretched and compressed, interfering with the communication between the brain and the body. The subluxation affects the brain’s ability to keep the body functioning correctly.

  • Correct posture and alignment.

When two vertebrae are misaligned, they can rub together and wear away the intervertebral disc and the joints of the spine, leading to herniated discs, arthritis, or degenerative disease.  These lead to back pain, pinched nerves, movement restriction, and even disability. The proper posture and alignment that chiropractic care provides lead to healthy spinal structures and improvement in the overall wellbeing of the body and mind.

  • The body is more flexible, and injury is less likely.

When the back or neck is tight, stiff, and lacking the correct range of motion and flexibility, injuries can easily occur during routine movements. The back goes out because the spine was already tense and stiff.

  • Faster healing.

When communication is clear between the brain and the body, the body heals itself faster and recovers from injury more quickly. When a subluxation is the underlying cause of an injury, chiropractic correction of the subluxation releases tension, creating the necessary environment for healing and recovery to proceed.

So, to recover fully, the subluxation, which is the underlying cause of the injury, needs to be resolved. The result is a healthy, flexible, and limber spine, which can adapt to a positional or load changes quickly.
